Gluten Free Diet

What is a celiac disease? People who fail to tolerate a protein, namely 'gluten' where the small intestine is damaged. Gluten is found in wheat, rye, barley. People with celiac disease after consuming such food item containing the 'gluten', the small intestine gets damaged. That is small protrusions on the lining of small intestine are lost due to this intake of gluten in cases of celiac diseased. These small protrusions are called 'villi'. If these villi are damaged a person is considered malnourished- regardless of the quantity of food intake.

To follow a gluten free diet is the treatment for celiac disease. Experts advise to eliminate all the food items that contain this particular protein called 'gluten'. Avoiding wheat, barley, rye will help the patient feel better in 6 months span. In case of elders, it may take about 2 years for intestine healing. The damage of the small intestine is stopped and health is improved as the intake of gluten free diet is increased. This intake of gluten free diet should be for life time. This heals the small intestine and villi are kept intact.

Studies show that people suffering from celiac diseases sometimes don't respond to the gluten free diet because their intestine is severely damaged and is unable to absorb enough nutrients.
