Childhood Obesity
Genetic Factors
Extensive studies indicate that only 9% of the children become obese if their parents are of normal weight. If either of the parents is overweight, 50% of their children tend to become obese. However, if both the parents are overweight the percentage of fat children touches the figure of 80%.
Obese children attain physical maturity earlier compared to normal children. Obese girls start menstruating earlier. In the matters of physical growth obese children are ahead of normal children by several years. More than 90% of children become obese due to their tendency to overeat.
It is now established conclusively that endocrine gland disorders are not responsible for obesity in childhood. Also it is noteworthy that a child inherits from his parents only the body-frame and not obesity. Children are never born obese; they are made obese.
